Applications open for community small projects in Comox Valley

Applications are open for up to $500 grants to support small groups or individuals undertaking local projects.

The grants are being funded by the Comox Valley Community Foundation and are designed for projects that focus on connection and making the community a better place to live.

Projects can take place between April and December, with the application deadline on April 20. Examples of past projects that received funding include:

  • Sharing the arts – neighbourhood musicians’ event/jam session in the park; art workshop
  • Celebration of Indigenous culture and language – craft night, harvesting traditional foods
  • Sharing of skills and knowledge across generations – youth teaching seniors to use iPad/tablets
  • Growing and eating local food – mushroom growing/harvesting; community garden work bees; composting projects
  • Youth-led projects – youth interviewing seniors; reading buddy program; care packages for seniors
  • Diversity and inclusion – hosting a 2SLGBTQIA+ event; spring BBQ for your townhouse complex with all residents invited; moms and toddlers’ event

The foundation’s president, Christine Helpard, says they are excited to support the program for another year, after aiding more than two dozen last year.

“A total of 19 projects were funded in 2022, ranging from block parties to pollinator pathways,” said Helpard. “We hope to see this program continue to have tremendous impact at the neighbourhood level.”

More information along with the application link can be found on the foundation’s website.

The foundation says they have awarded $5.75 million to over 175 local non-profits and 250 students since 1996.
