RCMP not responsible for crash near Seal Bay that led to injuries: IIO

RCMP officers in the Comox Valley are not responsible for injuries in a single-vehicle collision near Seal Bay last month, according to the Independent Investigations Office.

The crash involved a BMW in the early morning of Feb. 12. Officers were already at the scene of a different collision when the BMW approached, paused for a moment and made a U-turn before speeding away.

An officer followed, trying to make a traffic stop, but the BMW crashed shortly after.

The IIO says based on GPS coordinates, police records, dispatch reports and satellite mapping of the roadblock, the BMW was already speeding when the officer decided to follow.

They add the speed was unsafe for the narrow, wet road, and the officer was almost half a kilometre behind the BMW when it crashed.

The chief civilian director of the IIO concluded that the evidence demonstrates police action was not responsible for the collision or the injuries suffered by the BMW driver.
