Highland Secondary School recognizes bus driver for his big heart

A local transit operator known as “The Flowerman” has been recognized by a local high school for his good deeds.

According to BC Transit, anyone who lives in the Comox Valley and rides the bus knows JD Ludlow. They add he is a character filled to the top with community spirit and he has been lifting people up and making them smile for last three years.

Since moving to the valley from Manitoba, Ludlow has overcome a lot of personal challenges such as homelessness, anxiety and depression. He says he sees it as a personal mission to help others fell joy.

BC Transit says his random acts of kindness started off with Lei Day in May 2021 where he handed out leis to people getting on his bus. What he calls his “shenanigans” have grown and have included a community snow shovelling cavalry and Valentine’s Day events.

Highland Secondary presented him with their Highland Has Heart Award on March 1 for the “kindness, compassion and how he has spread around the Comox Valley over the years.”

The award left an impact on Ludlow, making him smile and shed a few tears.

“Of all the kind gestures I’ve experienced over the last few years, this by far has had the most impact,” said Ludlow. “To have children and a high school acknowledge what I’ve done is amazing.”
