Public can provide input on solid waste management plan through open houses

You can give your thoughts and learn more about the Comox Strathcona Waste Management’s solid waste management plan at two open houses this month.

The open houses will cover how they manage waste across the Comox Valley and Strathcona Regional Districts, and the open houses will provide insight into everything from landfills and recycling depots to how they manage greenhouse gas emissions and protect ground water.

The first online open house will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Waste management adds that pre-registration is required.

An in-person open house will be held on Sept. 19 at the Maritime Heritage Centre, at 621 Island Hwy in Campbell River from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Community events will also be held at various times throughout September:

  • Fall Fair – Black Creek Community Centre – Sept. 9, 2023
  • Campbell River Farmer’s Market – Sept. 10, 2023
  • Hornby Island Fall Fair – Rosemuir Farm – Sept. 17, 2023
  • Comox Valley Home Show – Sept. 22-24, 2023

An online survey can also be found here and will be open until Sept. 25.

“We’ve heard from over 1,000 people this summer and have been encouraged by the high level of interest in how we manage garbage, recycling and compost across the Comox Valley and Strathcona Regional Districts,” said senior manager of solid waste services Vivian Schau.

“The upcoming open houses are yet another opportunity for folks to learn more about how we currently manage waste and to hear their feedback about our draft goals and guiding principles for the next ten years.”

More information can be found on the Comox Strathcona Waste Management website.
