Province declares “Level 4 Drought Conditions”

As a result of these epic dry weather conditions, the BC Government has announced a Level 4 drought rating for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

Officials have now suspended angling in streams and rivers throughout southern Vancouver Island, thanks to record low stream flows and warm water temperatures.

We spoke to Valerie Cameron, Water Stewardship Manager with the BC Government.

Cameron says these tinder dry conditions have proven to be highly stressfull for Vancouver Island fisheries.

Cameron says those potential impacts from Level 4, conditions could involve further declines in stream,
lake and aquifer levels and water shortages, impacting
people, industry, agriculture, wildlife, and fish stocks.

She says all water users are urged to step up their water conservation efforts.
