Track and field event for disabled athletes starts Friday

A track and field event for athletes with disabilities is taking place in Courtenay on Friday.

Operation High Jump is an event that has been taking place for 28 years, allowing people with various abilities to take part in track and field-style events.

Comox Community Centre recreation programmer Heather Bailey says it is a really good feeling seeing the participants take part in athletic activities.

“Some of these athletes train for the event year-round, and it’s just a real highlight in their year,” said Bailey.

“This is an opportunity to compete amongst their peers, so it levels the playing field and provides the opportunity that’s not necessarily out there frequently within their communities.”

She says some athletes from Campbell River and Powell River come to the Comox Valley to take part in this event.

The event will see 50-metre, 100-metre and 200-metre dashes, with a ball and spoon walk, wheelchair softball throw, a sack race and tug of war.

Bailey adds advanced registration is not required to join, and any athletes who want to join the event can show up on the day of.

The event will start at nine in the morning, taking place at Vanier Track until three in the afternoon.
