Local food organization looks for support from community

With people getting ready for the holiday season, a food organization in the Comox Valley is looking for your support.

Lush Valley Food Action Society is an organization that aims to give healthy and local food to residents in the Valley.

Executive director Maurita Prato says while more support is given to the community during the holiday season, they have noticed more trouble in January.

“People are getting additional Christmas hampers sometimes during this time of year, they may be getting support through various channels, and what we tend to see in January is that people have spent all of their money,” said Prato.

“In our organization, we are in a unique position in that we provide ongoing support all-year round, so we make sure that in January people continue to get the support that they need.”

Prato says with an increasing need from the community and the rising cost of food, the society has been spending significantly more on food every year.

While they have an alternative to buy from their farm partners and keep prices stable for the Good Food Box program, she adds they are incurring more costs.

“We ask and lean on our community’s generosity in order to meet as many of the needs in the community as we can, so we ask that people consider donating at this time,” said Prato.

Along with donating, Lush will also run a holiday campaign for the season, with a goal of raising $20,000 to help operate the programs needed to support the community’s most vulnerable.

The campaign will kick off next Tuesday.
