The City of Courtenay says the Dingwall Steps Project is now fully complete and it will enhance connections between East and West Courtenay.
Made possible with a $275,738 grant from the province, it features structural steel and concrete steps, rest areas with benches and lighting, asphalt pavement connecting to steps, a bike channel and trees and landscaping.
The steps connect the top of Dingwall Road to Carmanah Drive and further. They say it will connect residents to community resources like North Island College, Queneesh Elementary School, the Comox Valley Hospital and transit connections.
Courtenay mayor Bob Wells says the steps were ready to use in January, were popular right away and fit with their vision for the future.
“This project fits nicely with our broader community goal of encouraging more people to consider leaving their cars at home, and it’s also a great place to get active,” said Wells.
“We’re really pleased, the steps provide a link to major destinations, shopping opportunities and residential areas; and they’re a big improvement for people travelling east-west in Courtenay.”
Transportation and Infrastructure minister Rob Flemming says this will give people more choices in their method of getting to and from their home, school, job or favourite activities.
At the top of the stairs, there is also a view of Courtenay and the Comox Glacier.
