Vancouver Island MLA takes aim at province on wildfires

Wildfires were on the agenda in Victoria this week… where Nanaimo North Cowichan MLA Doug Routley was taking aim at the government’s record.

Routley says ever since the devastating 2003 fires in Kelowna the province has known about the pressing need to help municipalities clean up forest fuels that allow fires to spread.

But less and less money is being spent on that work. And he calls the government’s latest idea for things like impounding the cars of people who toss cigarette butts a “distraction”

Routley says even the premier acknowledges climate change means bad fire seasons will be more common… and the province needs put more money into preventing so called “interface” fires.
