City launches new drop-off yard waste point for limited time

The City of Courtenay has launched a new, but temporary drop-off point for people with extra yard waste.

It’s part of a free program focusing on extending curbside collection to residents with a lot of yard waste.

Manager of solid waste Chris Thompson says some properties generate more yard waste than others.

“Staff will be monitoring resident interest in the pilot program, as well as overall compliance with the program, to determine how to offer this service again in the fall,” said Thompson.

The city says you can drop-off leaves, grass clippings, flowers, plants, and small branches that are less than 3 inches in diameter. You can also drop off loose or paper-bagged materials.

They ask you to not bring food waste, food-soiled paper, and plastic bags to the location, as they will not be accepted.

The drop-off point can be found at the end of McKenzie Avenue, open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will be available until May 31.
