Toy Library to celebrate 10 years on Saturday

A local non-profit in the Comox Valley is turning 10 this Saturday.

The Comox Valley Toy Library Society is a volunteer-run organization that lends toys to families and caregivers of young children.

With this year marking their 10-year anniversary, inventory manager Sandra Cox says it feels wonderful to reach that mark.

“We feel that we are really contributing a great deal to the community,” said Cox.

“We have a growing interest in the community with the toy library, which speaks to the need that we are serving, that is definitely there.”

Cox says the library was formed after a group heard of a toy library in Australia, where after licensing their database and learning from them, the group would strike out on their own.

She says they try to provide quality toys that are long-lasting, educational, and fun.

“We have puzzles and games, trucks and cars, imaginative toys, we have music-making toys, and we are building our collection of baby gear so that parents or grandparents can borrow things like a baby seat, baby bath, or a jumper,” said Cox.

“We feel that we are helping families with their home be calmer, we are helping children develop mentally and socially because a lot of the toys are interactive.”

The library plans to celebrate with food, drinks, decorations, volunteers to help the children, a playspace and new toys for families to borrow.

The celebration will take place in the St. George united church on Fitzgerald at sixth street on Saturday April 20 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
