$1 million is going to a long-term care village set to open in Comox this summer.
The village is called Providence Living at the Views, the first public, non-profit, long-term care village in Canada. It aims to offer residents independence, social connections, and everyday activities while providing medical care.
According to the Eldercare Foundation, an organization that raises funds for long-term care, they are providing $1 million to support the initiative.
Eldercare executive director Tom Arnold says the project has a more human-centered approach.
“It’s not just about providing great medical care, it’s about providing a sense of home, emotional bonds, and opportunities for seniors to continue to exercise authorship in their own lives even as their abilities diminish,” said Arnold.
The foundation says the village is based on the concepts of a dementia village, where along with care, the project also includes a five-year study on the care village. It will focus on providing insights to build more person-centered care villages across BC.
The village is expected to open in July.
