CVRD to enforce dog leashing this spring and summer

Dog leashing will be enforced this spring and summer throughout parks and trails in the Comox Valley.

The Comox Valley Regional District says while leashing is mandatory in some parks, the rules aren’t always being followed.

Manager of parks Mark Harrison says they have seen concerns raised over dogs chasing livestock, causing fatalities.

“Some dogs are displaying harassing behavior towards park patrons within leashing mandatory parks,” said Harrison.

“We need to ensure that park patrons are respecting the agricultural properties alongside our trail systems, like the One Spot Trail, and are also following mandatory leashing requirements within our parks and trails systems.”

He adds by keeping your dog under control and following leashing rules, it not only protects ecosystems, but also the agricultural community and residents.

To ensure rules are being followed, a bylaw team will patrol all the parks and trail systems in the district, where fines will be handed out to those who don’t follow requirements.

Fines include $100 for allowing any animal to run at large in a park, $100 for failing to keep your dog under control, or $100 for failing to restrain your dog.
