Acting CAO hopes CVRD approves alignment for Cumberland connector

Acting chief administrative officer of the Comox Valley Regional District hopes the board approves a new alignment for a local road connector.

In a report, Doug Demarzo is recommending that they align the Cumberland to Courtenay connector along the parkway and through the Highway 19 interchange, going underneath the highway as part of the Active Transportation network plan.

The plan, approved by the board in 2021, aims to bring a framework to coordinate the building of a transportation infrastructure, while encouraging a culture of transporting in the region.

For the plan, staff recommended two options to align the connector in April, with the second being between southbound Highway 19 off-ramp and an industrial property.

According to Demarzo in the report, they were told to come back with a preferred option in May.

“Staff have since met with Village of Cumberland staff, representatives of the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition (CVCC), and staff with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to review alignment options,” said Demarzo.

“All parties have agreed on Option 1 as the preferred alignment option.”

Demarzo adds that the first option would not only avoid hazardous conflict points, but also avoid tight or squeeze points under the highway.

If this option is approved, he says staff will prepare concept drawings for the connector later this year.

The report will be presented for today’s board meeting, starting at 4:00 pm.
