Public safety advisory to be in effect for Puntledge River

Be careful when you are around the Puntledge River, as a safety advisory will be in effect on Monday.

According to BC Hydro’s public affairs coordinator Karla Louwers, they will be increasing water flows from the Comox Dam by 16 cubic meters per second to control water levels at the Comox Reservoir.

The increase is because water inflows from the wet weather have slowly raised the reservoir’s water level, which is 134.9 metres above sea level.

Louwers says they are forecasting a potentially significant storm event today heading into Monday.

“There is still some uncertainty as to how the storm systems may track,” said Louwers.

She says while inflows are below normal, it could go up to 60 cubic meters per second because of the storm.

While the increased flows happen, temporary safety signs will be put along the system.

Work runs Monday evening through Wednesday.
