BC Ferries is exploring dock availability options and alterations on the Baynes Sound Connector route following a complaint after a terminally ill man during a service interruption.
On May 2, the Baynes Sound Connector ferry was out of service, forcing Gracie MacDonald to hire a private boat to transport her brother Andy to the hospital.
He died shortly after arriving.
MacDonald says the cable ferry is less capable than the ferry it replaced.
BC Ferries is extending condolences to her and her family.
“We have reached out to her to share our condolences and to let her know that we are exploring options to ensure dock availability for alternate services during disruptions,” said BC Ferries.
“We are also considering alterations to our existing facility to accommodate water taxi services in the future.”
They say in the incident, there were complications during scheduled cable replacement overnight when the new cable end went overboard.
While they have changed 12 cables overnight since 2015, this issue was a rare one for them, according to the organization.
As a result, BC Ferries are planning to have future cable changes align with out of service period, while providing alternate service.
Because the cable ferry is important for both the Denman and Hornby Island communities, the ferry organization aims to make improvements to ensure it meets the needs of customers.
