Two new childcare centers coming to Courtenay

Two elementary schools in Courtenay will soon have new childcare spaces.

Arden Elementary and Glacier View Elementary will each get 75 childcare spaces, which includes 24 spaces for toddlers, 32 for kids aged three to five, and 94 spaces for school-age care on school grounds.

Minister of State for Childcare Mitzi Dean says having these childcare programs on school grounds is better for everyone involved.

“By providing high-quality childcare directly on school grounds, children receive the best start on their early learning in a familiar, nurturing environment, while making it easier for busy parents to balance their professional and personal responsibilities,” said Dean.

The province says they’ll provide nearly $8 million for the spaces through the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund to School District 71.

They say this comes as a funding pathway was created to provide school districts expanded or new opportunities for childcare spaces in schools.
