New program to support those making more housing in Comox

Homeowners will be supported for making more housing in Comox through a new program.

Called the Home Suite Home Incentive Program, it will offer a $3,000 grant to those making a new accessory dwelling unit or upgrading an unauthorized dwelling unit to industry code, with hopes of increasing housing options for residents.

Town mayor Nicole Minions says the town looks forward to working with homeowners through this process and get these spaces finished.

The town says this program is only limited to the first 25 qualifying dwelling units, with those planning to build coach houses or are upgrading an unauthorized suite in an existing home may also be eligible.

For a dwelling unit to qualify, it must not be decommissioned or not utilized for five years after being occupied.

They hope through the program, the Town can pre-zone over 3,000 units by the end of this year.
