RCMP releases first half of 2016 report

The Comox Valley RCMP has released the first half of its 2016 report.

Inspector Tim Walton says there wasn’t really a huge spike in overall crime from last year to this year. He notes Courtenay represents about 58% of the calls received by the RCMP, and residents can expect around a 1% increase once the new hospital opens up.

Walton says they continue to respond to reports of harassment, with social media being used in many of the cases.

Walton adds that assault cases are down by about a third from last year. He notes there was also an overall decrease in property crimes but an increase in shoplifting and bicycle thefts.

Walton says the RCMP will take a look at drug-related crime in the region and continue to work on decreasing numbers in bicycle thefts and thefts from vehicles.
