COURTENAY, BC- Say goodbye to a longstanding tree in Lewis Park.
Crews will remove one Sitka Spruce tree near the washrooms at the park, beside the parking area by the Courtenay River, on Friday.
An arborist recommended the removal. Last month, a similar tree fell in the park due to high winds and stormy conditions. Because of this, more in-depth assessments of similar trees within the park were conducted.
13 coniferous trees were assessed using the International Society of Arboriculture TRAQ assessment techniques. One tree out of the 13 was identified as exceeding the risk threshold.
A number of factors were considered in the assessments, including tree health, site conditions, history and tree location. This particular Sitka Spruce’s location, which is close to a walkway, sports fields and parking, as well as its deteriorating health, led to the decision to remove it from the site.
New tree plantings in the park are scheduled for October 2018. The removal of this tree will take place on the morning of Friday, Feb. 23rd.
The Lewis Park entrance (at the Totem Poles), as well as the road and walkway by the Courtenay River will be closed for the morning, until the tree removal is complete.
