Options available for homeless to vote in Comox Valley

COMOX VALLEY, B.C. – You don’t need a fixed address to have your say in the upcoming municipal election.

According to Comox Valley Coalition to End Homelessness coordinator Andrea Cupelli, those who are homeless can give an address of a shelter, hostel or other address and make a statutory declaration of residency when they are registering to vote onsite at the polls.

Cupelli added that they will still need to provide one piece of government issued identification that shows their signature for identification verification purposes.

BC Transit will be running for free on election day, and so far Courtenay candidates Bob Wells, Doug Hillian and Wendy Morin have told Cupelli that they will be offering rides to the polls on election day, as well.

In the meantime, Cupelli also created small leaflets for each municipality that can be printed and cut up to distribute.

The Coalition will be sharing a table at the Resource Fair with the Comox Valley Health Network and will be distributing these leaflets, and answering questions about voting process.

“I will make sure there are some at the Courtenay Library and St George’s Soup Kitchen and all our upcoming Affordable Housing Benefits Everyone Drop-In Houses,” Cupelli said.

“We want to encourage as many people, especially those who are most vulnerable to get out there and vote.”
