Wading Pool expected to close this summer; says new report

Courtenay’s outdoor pool is expected to be open ahead of summer, but the wading pool will remain closed.

That comes from a report by the City’s Director of Recreation, Culture, and Community Services Susie Saunders, saying these results come after repairs and assessments were made for both pools.

She says for the outdoor pool, immediate repairs and upgrades such as the installation of an anti-entrapment shield to the main drain, repairs to the basin and deck, and painting have been completed.

While replacing the sand filter medium and filter component repairs are ongoing, Saunders says the pool is expected to open on or near the planned schedule.

But for the wading pool, crews found some significant water loss.

“Further inspections of the wading pool have identified additional areas that require further assessment to ensure the pool is operating in full compliance with the BC Pool Regulation and BC Pool Design Guidelines,” said Saunders.

“Completion of this assessment is not expected until early summer 2024, following which staff will review the scope of repairs required to determine a path forward.”

While the pool is open during July and August for small children and their families, the work to assess and repair it means that the pool won’t be open for this season.

Saunders adds that while this closure will be disappointing to the community, the spray park will be available for the summer.

The report will be presented to city council at Wednesday’s meeting, starting at 4:00 p.m.
