Cumberland Community School to get 16 new classrooms

Cumberland Community School will soon be getting new classrooms.

That comes from BC’s minister of education and childcare Rachna Singh, who announced earlier today that the school will have 16 new classrooms and 345 seats, bringing the school capacity to 560 students.

Singh says the expansion includes replacing the annex building and portables on site.

“This addition will also include a neighbourhood learning centre that will benefit the school community with an industrial kitchen,” said Singh.

She says the expansion comes as more families are moving to the area, with the province aiming to keep up with the growing needs of the community.

More than $31 million has been invested to the project, with the Comox Valley School District investing $200,000.

Principal of the school Warren Colegrave says as part of the community, he’s relieved with this announcement.

“The school has grown substantially especially over the last five years, and this is necessary for our community,” said Colegrave.

“This has been almost one and a half to two-year process to get us to this point.”

Colegrave says it’s important to keep classrooms in acceptable sizes, with the expansion offering them a chance to figure out how they can better design new classrooms that meet the needs of students.

He adds this project will be another chapter in the school’s history.

The expansion is set to finish by 2027.
