Comox Valley chamber celebrates business leaders at Starry Night Gala

The Comox Valley business community took the spotlight Saturday night at the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual business excellence awards.

The Starry Night Gala, held at the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay, marked the 51st edition of the chamber’s awards, which recognize local businesses and business leaders.

Awards presented during the evening included Goblins Jujitsu, which won the Family First category. The award was sponsored by Jet FM.

Owner Adam Morden said his business focuses on building strong connections with families and the broader community and often sponsors children so they can attend self-defence classes.

Adam Morden comments:

“Everything we do is based around families,” Morden said. “We have parent and kids classes, kids classes, adult classes, we try to put everyone together and really try to connect with the community.”

Bill Anglin of Remax Ocean Pacific received the Business Leader award. Anglin said he was honoured but noted the depth of leadership among local entrepreneurs.

Bill Anglin comments:

“You look at the people who were nominated, not just in my category but all the categories, they’re all leaders in the business world, but they’re also leaders in the community and they give back as much as they can to the community,” Anglin said.

The event featured 15 award categories, with 45 Comox Valley businesses represented through nominations. A live art auction held during the gala raised $7,600 for the Comox Valley Hospice Society.

Chamber executive director Tracey Clarke thanked organizers, sponsors and nominees for making the event a success.

Tracey Clarke comments:

“It’s really important to celebrate the excellence that we have in our business community,” Clarke said. “These awards are community nominations. So somebody out there, a client, a customer or maybe your business neighbour or competitor was nominating these businesses, non-profits and individuals.”

Other awards presented included Cumberland Brewing Co. as Business of the Year, Aurum Solar as New Business of the Year and Foveo Running as Small Business of the Year.
