2026 Emergency Preparedness Week to focus on wildfire resilience

Emergency Preparedness Week is approaching, and this year’s focus is on preparing for a hot and dry summer.

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) will mark Emergency Preparedness Week May 3 to 9 with events planned throughout the Comox Valley.

Cari McIntyre, manager of Comox Valley Emergency Management, said the week is an opportunity for residents and businesses to learn practical steps they can take during unexpected events.

“Being prepared for any emergency can make a significant difference in how individuals, neighbours and communities can successfully and proactively prevent, respond and recover together.”

Wildfire Preparedness Community Day is scheduled for May 9 at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fire and emergency services partners will demonstrate and share practical tips for reducing wildfire risk in homes and neighbourhoods.

Emergency service partners and local fire department personnel will take part in interactive displays, live demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages.

“Let’s have some fun learning together while we build our knowledge, capacity and confidence in preparation for wildfire season,” said Lt. Ian Robertson, chair of the Comox Valley FireSmart Collaborative.

Comox Valley Emergency Management will also set up information booths at grocery stores during Emergency Preparedness Week:

  • Comox Mall (John’s Independent) – May 4, 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Royal Canadian Superstore – May 6, 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Thrifty Foods (Cliffe Avenue) May 7, 3 to 5 p.m.
