Over 100 new childcare spaces now available at G.P. Vanier Secondary School

Comox Valley families will now have access to more licensed child-care spaces at a local high school.

A new child-care centre opened Wednesday, June 10, at G.P. Vanier Secondary School, adding 126 new spaces in the area.

Education and Child Care Minister Lisa Beare said the spaces will help build healthier, more connected communities.

“The new centre at G.P. Vanier Secondary School will support children in a caring environment while young parents continue their education and build bright futures.”

The facility will be operated by Today N Tomorrow Learning Society and will support infants, toddlers, preschool-aged children and expectant and parenting students through the organization’s young parent program.

A $7.9-million investment was provided through ChildCareBC’s New Spaces Fund, which is jointly supported by provincial and federal funding.

Comox Valley Schools board chair Michelle Waite said many families have been asking for more spaces in the area.

“By expanding access to quality child care and early learning opportunities, we are helping children get the best possible start while making it easier for parents and caregivers to participate in work, school and community life.”

The new building brings together Today N Tomorrow’s young parent program, the Teddies N Toddlers Infant and Toddler Care Program and the Little Friends Early Learning Centre for children aged three to five, all in one location.

The centre features bright learning spaces, dedicated sensory and nap areas, age-appropriate washrooms and outdoor play areas.

The building also includes meeting and support spaces for families to access services and community programs in one location.
