Shorter impaired driving enforcement campaign sees fewer prohibitions

RCMP on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast saw significantly fewer impaired drivers during this year’s summer enforcement campaign compared with last year.

Officers handed out 32 impaired-driving prohibitions on the Island between June 15 and July 31.

The 2025 campaign ran for four weeks longer and resulted in 131 prohibitions.

“This year’s summer impaired driving campaign was only six weeks compared to ten weeks last year,” says superintendent Lori Orstad with BC Highway Patrol. “Our officers did notice improvements in some of our usual check stops in 2026, but we are intercepting far too many people who choose to drive while impaired.”

BC Highway Patrol was particularly disappointed with drivers in the Cowichan Valley earlier this month.
