CVRD touts opening of new artificial turf field in Courtenay

The new artificial turf field at G.P. Vanier Secondary School in Courtenay is now open for community bookings.

The approximately $6-million project adds year-round field space for sports including baseball, soccer, lacrosse and rugby.

The Comox Valley Regional District says community bookings are available after 5 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends.

Some amenities, including washrooms, player benches and spectator bleachers, are still under construction.

“Opening this field is an important milestone for sport and recreation in the Comox Valley,” said Comox Valley Recreation Commission Chair Melanie McCollum. “The new artificial turf will improve access for thousands of athletes and help meet the demand of local sport organizations serving our active community.”

The CVRD said the project was funded through grants, reserves and long-term borrowing.

The field measures approximately 8,790 square metres and accommodates baseball, soccer, men’s and women’s field lacrosse, field hockey, and rugby and football practice.
