Two injured in assault at North Island College, investigation underway

Comox Valley RCMP are investigating an aggravated assault that took place at North Island College early Wednesday morning.

Police responded to multiple reports of an assault involving an edged weapon at about 12:53 a.m. at one of the residence buildings on campus.

Upon arrival, RCMP located two injured victims, then identified and arrested the suspect.

The Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation with assistance from the Island District Forensic Identification Section. Police said the college is offering immediate and ongoing support to staff and students affected by the incident.

“The investigation remains in its early stages, and officers are working diligently to uncover all of the circumstances surrounding this disturbing incident,” said Cst. Monika Terragni. “The motivation behind the assault remains under investigation.”

The suspect, a 21-year-old Burnaby man, is in custody pending a court appearance. The victims were taken to hospital and both are expected to recover from their injuries.

In a statement, RCMP said there is no information to suggest any ongoing threat to public safety.

“The swift arrest of the suspect and continued police presence are intended to help ensure the safety and reassurance of students, staff, and the broader community,” read a statement from RCMP.

RCMP are asking witnesses or anyone with information to contact police to assist with the investigation.

Police are working closely with the college as the investigation unfolds.
