CVRD offers free yard waste drop-off program to reduce wildfire risk

Residents in the Comox Valley Regional District are being encouraged to make their properties FireSmart.

The CVRD said Comox Valley residents can drop off yard debris for free this fall to help reduce wildfire risk.

The program runs from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15 at 1301 Knight Road in Comox, daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Leaves, grass, branches up to three inches in diameter and plants are accepted.

“Removing dry leaves, twigs, and branches from your yard, roof, and gutters is a simple way to reduce the risk of wildfire around your home,” said Comox Fire Rescue Captain Brent Craven. “Every FireSmart step, big or small, can help protect your property and our community.”

The service is for residential users only. Invasive plants, food waste, rocks and stumps are not accepted.

The program returns next spring, from April 1 to June 15.
