Cumberland is planning a new operations centre for its Engineering and Public Works Department.
The village says the current facility on Dunsmuir Avenue is aging and needs significant upgrades and more space.
It is exploring a new facility on village-owned land on Union Road, which would allow the current centre to remain open during construction.
Cumberland is also considering development of surplus Union Road land to help fund the project and reduce costs for taxpayers.
“The Village has an opportunity to leverage surplus land on Union Road to help raise funds for construction, reducing the cost to taxpayers,” said a report from the village. “Through two grants from the BC Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP), the Village received expert advice on the market viability and expected rate of return of several scenarios for the use, development and disposition of the surplus land including retail / service commercial, hotel, and residential.”
The village says community engagement is planned, with details to be announced.
