Scott planning to keep up fishery work in Hornby Island trustee role

HORNBY ISLAND, BC- Grant Scott has plans for Hornby Island.

Scott won the local trust election by over two hundred votes against opponent George Buvyer with 316 to Buvyer’s 92 votes on March 2nd.

The newly elected trustee is ready to get started.

“I look forward to it. I have been to one of the trust council meetings and I found the issue they were talking about and the group very interesting.” said Scott.

According to Scott his hopes for the island are to further the objectives around marine planning, specifically with the herring fishery issue.

The hope is to find a solution that is more sustainable for the island itself.

“Well, the Island Trust itself passed a motion to send a letter to (federal fisheries) Minister Wilkinson asking him to place a moratorium on the fishery. This will basically be until they can find a sustainable way to manage it.” said Scott.

He plans to work with everyone to solve this issue and to raise more awareness for it.

“We need to protect these waters and the creatures within them for future generations, that is the objective.” said Scott.

Prior to the by-election, former Hornby Island Local Trust and Islands Trust Council member Tony Law resigned.

There were allegations against him from female residents of the Hornby Island community.

The Islands Trust decided against an investigation into these allegations. More details on what happened can be found here.
