Hydro planning to seismically upgrade the Strathcona Dam

BC Hydro is looking at building a lower-level power tunnel in the rock at the Strathcona Dam.

Spokesperson Stephen Watson says it would make it more seismically secure and ease pressure on the dam in the event of an earthquake.

Watson says if an earthquake hits the dam in its current condition, lowering the reservoir levels behind it would be nearly impossible.

Watson notes that Hydro is also looking at upgrading the three spillway gates.

Projects are still in the planning stage, and if approved, work is expected to begin in early 2021.
