Comox Valley RCMP seeking new information for man who disappeared six years ago

Investigators are hoping new information will help determine what happened to a missing man.

The Comox Valley RCMP said it is renewing its appeal for information on the disappearance of Michael Gazatas, who was last seen Jan. 31, 2020.

Const. Monika Terragni, a media relations officer with the Comox Valley RCMP, said even the smallest details could be significant.

“A vehicle part, disturbed terrain, an abandoned truck in a difficult-to-access area – any piece of information, no matter how minor it may seem, could help move this investigation forward.”

Gazatas was last seen leaving in a red 2011 Ford Ranger with a B.C. licence plate HX4109 and has not been seen since, despite extensive searches and ongoing investigative efforts.

Investigators said new residents exploring Vancouver Island’s backcountry may be able to identify details in remote areas, particularly in northern Vancouver Island.

Police believe Gazatas’ vehicle may be in a location not visible from the road or in terrain that is difficult to access.

Gazatas’ sisters, Calliope and Sophie, said the landscape changes over time and they hope something that was not visible before may now be seen.

“We’re not expecting a miracle, but we want to keep the door open to hope – hope that one day we will know what happened to our brother.”

Anyone who sees Gazatas’ truck or has information related to his disappearance is asked to contact the Comox Valley RCMP.
