Comox Valley RCMP warning of spikes found on Courtenay trails

Bike riders and trail users are being asked to exercise caution after multiple reports of spike devices being found in the Comox Valley.

The latest incident was reported June 14 when a rider discovered several metal caltrops on trails near Powerhouse Road, one of which punctured the tire of his dirt bike.

“Regardless of who may be using a trail, roadway or public space, intentionally placing hazardous objects where they may injure people on animals creates an unacceptable risk to the community and it’s against the law,” said Const. Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP media relations officer.

Police said they have also received reports of caltrops being found in a residential driveway and on public roadways in Courtenay.

In one incident on May 20, a motorist suffered two flat tires after driving through the Laketrail Road and Marsden Road area, where caltrops were later discovered lodged in the vehicle’s tires.

RCMP said the greater concern is the risk the spikes pose to public safety.

Caltrops can puncture bicycles, motorcycles, vehicles, mobility scooters and emergency vehicles.

Police said the devices also present a significant danger to pedestrians, children, pets and wildlife and can cause serious injuries if stepped on.

Comox Valley RCMP are asking residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, discarded spike devices or information that may assist investigators.
