Port Alberni man charged following fatal highway collision near Fanny Bay in 2025

A man has been charged following a fatal collision near Fanny Bay last year. 

The crash happened on July 31, 2025, when a pickup truck towing a recreational vehicle trailer collided with multiple vehicles and killed a man who was standing on the side of Highway 19A. 

The B.C. Prosecution Service approved three charges against a 61-year-old Port Alberni man on June 24: 

  • impaired driving causing death  
  • driving with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams per cent causing death  
  • obstruction of a peace officer  

The man was arrested on July 13 and remains in custody pending bail hearings, according to the B.C. Highway Patrol. 

The charges have not been tested in court.
