RCMP seeking riders of dirt bike, e-bike seen driving dangerously along Cliffe Avenue

Police in the Comox Valley are looking to identify the riders of a dirt bike and an e-bike after they were seen driving recklessly on Courtenay streets.

The riders were captured on surveillance video riding dangerously along Cliffe Avenue at about 9:50 p.m. on July 16.

Cst. Monika Terragni of the Comox Valley RCMP said police continue to receive reports of unsafe riding involving unlicensed dirt bikes, e-bikes and electric scooters.

“This behaviour puts not only the riders at risk, but also pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and other members of the public who share our roads and trails.”

RCMP said one of the motorcycles appears to be a blue-and-white Husqvarna motocross dirt bike, possibly the same one reported in another dangerous driving complaint on July 10.

Since July 1, Comox Valley RCMP said they have received more than 20 reports involving the dangerous or unlawful operation of e-bikes, electric scooters and unlicensed dirt bikes.

Police said the incidents have included excessive speeding, dangerous driving, riding without helmets, unauthorized riding in parks and other public spaces, collisions causing injury, multiple incidents of riders failing to stop for police, an e-bike collision and a recent crash on Lake Trail Road in which a dirt bike rider suffered a fractured leg.

RCMP said officers have identified and taken enforcement action against a number of riders through proactive patrols, public reporting and followup investigations.

In several cases, police said riders have been stopped and enforcement action taken, although many have fled before officers could safely stop them.

Anyone with information about dangerous e-bike, dirt bike or electric scooter use is asked to contact the Comox Valley RCMP.
