Isfeld Interact club wins international video competition

COMOX, B.C.- Mark R. Isfeld students took away the top prize at the 9th Annual Rotary International video competition.

The school’s Interact Club beat 27 other countries. Entries were submitted by 140 Interact Clubs, including Isfeld.

Each year, Rotary International sponsors the video competition, with a goal to inspire others to take action.

This year’s theme was People of Action. Entries were submitted by 140 Interact Clubs.

“We are excited to announce that Mark R. Isfeld’s Interact Club has won this competition due to our creativity, teamwork and dedication to changing the world,” said Debra Long, school counselor and interact sponsor.

“As you will see in this video, our Interact Club members are people of action and have been busy supporting local and international projects. For several years, our major fundraising efforts have been used to help children in Honduras.”

The video was produced, filmed and edited entirely by students. The project was spear-headed by Kalyssa Heinrich and Vassily Petrousevitch.

“We always intended to produce a video to showcase to the school the work we are doing in Honduras, and to create some greater awareness about Interact and how to get involved,” said Heinrich, in a release by School District 71.

Interact puts students ages 12-18 together to help them develop leadership skills, while discovering the power of Service Above Self.

Each year, every Interact club carries out two service projects. One helps their school or community and one promotes international understanding.

Groups are supported by local Rotary clubs.

“This is an award-winning club that never sleeps. They are extraordinary young leaders who take on projects locally and internationally, and are truly making a difference,” said Joanna Coyle, the president of the Rotary Club of Comox.

The Isfeld club will receive a $1,000 donation from Rotary International to support one of their service projects.
