Snowboarder dies at Mount Washington

COURTENAY, B.C.- On the afternoon of Monday, January 22nd, a male snowboarder passed away after an accident on Mount Washington.

Resort spokesperson Sheila River told 98.9 the Goat that the snowboarder was found off-piste (un-groomed zone) in a treed area within the resort’s boundary.

“We just want to say a big thank you to our patrol team for their assistance in this instance,” she said.

“This is a very sad tragedy. Everyone here at the resort sends our sincerest condolences to the family and friends,” said Peter Gibson, Mount Washington’s General Manager, in a release from the resort.

The exact cause of death is not known at this time, and the name or age of the victim was not released.

The incident has been turned over to the BC Coroner’s Service.

This is the first death at the resort since 15 year old Reid Kyfiuk of Saanich passed away while snowboarding in 2015.
