BC Coroner confirms fentanyl related deaths

It’s official–fentanyl related deaths have hit Vancouver Island.

That from Regional Coroner Matt Brown with several deaths in our region linked to the drug.

Brown says between January, and May 31st of this year, there have been several fentanyl detected deaths…

(Two fentanyl detected deaths have been confirmed in Campbell River, a single case in Courtenay, seven in Nanaimo and two cases down island in Victoria, however no cases on the North Island, including Port McNeil and Port Hardy, and also no cases reported in Powell River.)

Brown explains the fentanyl deaths often involve several drugs…

As for whether the users were unaware the drugs they purchased contained fentanyl…

Brown says the BC Coroners Service has this warning for drug users..

Meanwhile Brown says they have not determined the cause of death for a man and woman found dead in an SUV recently in Campbell River, as their investigation continues. The Coroner has ruled out foul play.
