Water quality advisory lifted for majority of Comox Harbour

Water activities can resume in most of Comox Harbour and the estuary.

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) said, following extensive water quality testing since last week’s sewage leak, results are now consistently showing safe conditions for recreational water use.

Senior manager of capital projects delivery Charlie Gore said sampling results indicate bacteria from the spill did not spread in measurable amounts beyond the immediate area.

“We know that many people are eager to get back to the water, in particular the businesses in the area that rely on it, and we’re thankful for everyone’s patience during this past week while we monitored for public safety.”

An advisory remains in place for the foreshore between Jane Place and the Comox Wharf, as well as waters within the Comox Harbour Authority east of the marina.

Residents are still advised to avoid the foreshore and direct contact with the water in that area until further notice.

The CVRD is compiling test results received so far and says it will publish them by the end of this week.

Water quality testing will continue at a reduced frequency, and results will be shared publicly and with provincial and federal authorities.

The cause of the leak remains under investigation and updates will be shared when they become available.
