Open fires bans lifted in Coastal Fire Centre

All remaining Category 2 and Category 3 open-fire prohibitions in the Coastal Fire Centre will be lifted Sept. 30.

A Category 2 open fire is a fire, other than a campfire, that burns material in one pile no larger than two metres high and three metres wide, material in two piles that are each no larger than two metres high and three metres wide, or stubble or grass over an area no larger than 0.2 hectares.

A Category 3 open fire includes three or more piles, one or more piles exceeding two metres in height or three metres in width, one or more windrows or stubble or grass over an area larger than 0.2 hectares.

The prohibitions on binary exploding targets, fireworks, burn barrels, controlled air incinerators, air curtain burners and carbonizers will also be lifted.

BC Wildfire Service says municipalities can impose different restrictions and advises people to check local rules before lighting an open fire.
