A Vancouver Island legend is stepping away from municipal politics after 46 years, as the Mayor of Port McNeill, Gerry Furney, will not be seeking re-election when residents hit the polls in November.

Furney has spent the past 39 years as the Mayor of Port McNeill, and says he’s very proud of the progress the small community has made in that time.

Furney says he’ll be staying in Port McNeill, which his children and grand-children also call home. He’ll be around to keep an eye on things, and put his two cents in when possible.
