Building permits, housing starts surge in Comox Valley

COMOX VALLEY, B.C. – Here we grow again: development has skyrocketed in the Comox Valley.

According to November 2018 data released recently by Business Counts Comox Valley, year-to-date building permits are up 55 percent while multi-development housing starts have surged 76 percent in the valley.

Elsewhere, real estate sales dipped in the Comox Valley this year (YTD) compared to the first 10 months of 2017.

Year to date, sales of single family homes were down 10.1 percent, and apartments were down 11.9 percent compared to 2017 (YTD).

The dip in real estate sales hasn’t stopped prices from inching up.

The benchmark price for a single family home in the valley was $539,948, up 9.9 percent from last year, while apartments jumped 13.3 percent in price to, on average, $265,668.

Elsewhere, Invest Comox Valley stats show that more people are coming to Vancouver Island and the valley.

The number of BC Ferries passengers thus far in 2018 increased by five percent to 236,872 YTD, while the number of Vancouver Island Visitor Centre visitors jumped 57 percent.

Passengers at the Comox Valley Airport also increased, up 15 percent to 321,843.
