Police bike recovered after lunchtime incident

COURTENAY, B.C. – An incident involving two people and a bike patrol officer stopped traffic near the bottom of 5th Street in downtown Courtenay just after lunchtime today.

According to an eyewitness, the officer left his bike and was attempting to pull the driver out of the compact car.

At the same time, the passenger left the vehicle, slammed the officer’s bike on the road, and then ran down the sidewalk with it.

The witness noted that the driver was apprehended. There is no word on whether the passenger was also caught by police.

The bike is back in police hands, according to Cst. Monika Terragni, the Comox Valley RCMP’s media relations officer.

The vehicle was towed, which tied up traffic on the road for a short period of time, Terragni added.

No further details are available at this time.
