Raising awareness and erasing the stigma of drug-related deaths.
Those are two of the reasons why the valley is marking International Overdose Awareness Day on Saturday.
The Indigenous Women’s Sharing Society invites you to an Overdose Awareness Day Gathering at 576 England Avenue.
It starts at 2:00pm and will include naloxone training, guest speakers with lived experience, youth Hip hop performances, and a ceremony honoring the lives of loved ones who have died from accidental overdoses.
The society’s Patti Sture said the gathering is all about support.
“We need to bring awareness to our community and continue to support people in the community including families that have been impacted by the overdose crisis, including our youth in the community,” she said.
Sture said the day takes on even more importance after a Langley teen died from an overdose earlier this month.
“Regarding the recent event that had happened on the mainland about the child that overdosed at the skatepark (in Walnut Grove),” she said.Â
“It’s really important that we bring awareness because it can happen anywhere.”
