The national hockey spotlight will shine on Campbell River in March.
The city is one of 25 communities to host the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour.
From March 20 to 22, the tour will bring free outdoor hockey festivities along with live music and entertainment, National Hockey League alumni, and hockey-themed activities.
The local festival culminates with an outdoor viewing party of a game televised live from Dallas between the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars on Sportsnet.
Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will be hosting on site from the Sportsnet Mobile Studio.
“Campbell River is an enthusiastic hockey town, and with City and community support, I know we’ll be a great host for Hometown Hockey,” mayor Andy Adams said.
“We are thrilled to be provided another opportunity to showcase Campbell River to the rest of Canada and host an incredible event that will be enjoyed by people of all ages.”
Campbell River’s corporate officer, Elle Brovold, said this is a major coup for the city.
“I think this will be really fantastic,” she said. “We kind of consider ourselves a hockey town so this really gives us an opportunity to showcase that. It will be a national spotlight so it will give us the opportunity to show all the unique and wonderful features of Campbell River and continue to promote that tourism piece of our community.”
Brovold noted that Sportsnet broadcaster, Kyle Bukauskas, is from Campbell River and gave the city a letter of support in its bid to host the event.
More details about the event, including opportunities to volunteer, will be announced over the coming months as the city confirms plans with Rogers and community partners.
