Courtenay Fire Department crews had their hands full recently tackling a rash of bark mulch fires.

We spoke with Deputy Chief Kurt McDonald, who urges residents to be cautious in disposing of their smokes.

Fortunately fire crews quickly contained and doused all those bark mulch fires and there were no injuries in the fires.

Meanwhile, despite some scattered showers in the region today, Deputy Chief Kurt McDonald says conditions are still tinder dry out there right now.

The Coastal Fire Centre has various open burning bans in place, with the fire danger rating in the region pegged at high to extreme.
