Courtenay installs aqua dam for seasonal flood control

Water-filled aqua dams are being installed at Lewis Park as a seasonal precautionary measure to control flooding.

The dam was installed on Jan. 4 and is supposed to stay in place for the next several weeks.

The aqua dam has been used since 2015 to control flooding and is being deployed later than normal because of the unusually dry fall and winter seasons.

In past years, the city says they have used a tall wall on the Old Island Highway between Ryan and Headquarters roads. One-way check valves in storm drains have also been used in the Puntledge Business District to prevent backflow.

They city adds you can help reduce the potential for flooding in your neighbourhood by clearing grates over catch basins near property to remove leaves or debris.
