City to launch sidewalk cafe pilot project
Given the choice, a number of people would go to a restaurant and choose to sit on the outdoor patio.
Sidewalk cafes have been a topic of discussion at Courtenay city council lately. At the regular council meeting on May 11th, council passed a resolution for staff to report on the issues related to sidewalk cafes and recommendations for permitting sidewalk cafes in downtown Courtenay.
Now the city is moving forward on bringing them to the downtown core, with a pilot project to see how sidewalk cafes affect business, traffic and the downtown area.
Staff has been looking at other communities to see how they benefit from sidewalk cafes. They’ve taken a look at the town of Cumberland, Penticton, Vernon, Kamloops and others throughout the province.
